This class presents some of the central issues at stake in the theory of contemporary art: from the role of the image in the Society of the Spectacle, through the question of the object - between Object Oriented Ontology and performance art; to blackness, relational aesthetics and political art and artivism. Each issue will be presented in three stages: historical and theoretical background; a close reading of a central text; its manifestations in contemporary works of art. This class shall allow students to situate their own work within contemporary discourse of art and think of it in broader historical and theoretical contexts.
