The 2016 MFA Show continues the great tradition of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. In the last fifteen years of its existence in Tel Aviv, this program has been capable of nurturing multiple generation of artists, pushing them to the next level, giving them new challenges, opening new and unexpected horizons. Furthermore, this exhibition has become an important event for the Israeli art scene, something not to be missed.

This year we continue the tradition with a great group of artists: Matan Oren, Yuval Atzili, Naama Botzer, Dorian Gottlieb, Alona Goldberg, Gali Grinspan, Mika Hazan Bloom, Carien Yatsiv, Eliya Cohen, Niv Cohen, Michael Liani, Ktura Manor, Boris Marinin, Guy Nissenhaus, Adi Fluman, Barak Rubin, Tal Rosen, Noa Schwartz, Ayana Shany, Michal Tobiass (in alphabetical order according to their family names in Hebrew), and Julia Bolli, who joined us from Hochschule Luzern‎, Switzerland.

Following the specific architecture of the MFA 60 Salame street facilities, where the second year studios are located the exhibition radiates from its center – the lobby – and continues through three tentacles. While its center is dense, overwhelming, the more you explore its three tentacles the more the exhibition becomes rarefied and yet full of surprises.

Within this structure all of the 21 exhibiting artists have created a project, many of them site-specific, a new body of work or an exhibition-within-the-exhibition, employing fine art languages such as painting, sculpture, installation, video, sound, and performance. The 2016 MFA Show, which exists in a gray zone between 21 solo projects and one single group exhibition, is the culmination of two years of intense work, of debates, encounters, things spoken and left unspoken. It is also based on the unique sense of collegiality that characterizes these incredible 21 individuals.

This process and its successful result would not have been possible without the immeasurable support of the MFA faculty members and artists – Dor Guez, Yitzhak Livneh, Dudu Mezach, Moshe Ninio, Eli Petel, Nevet Yitzhak – and especially the second year studio seminar teachers Michal Helfman and Gilad Ratman, who have worked with them throughout this year, as well as the first year studio seminar teachers Yehudit Sasportas and Sharon Yaari, who worked with them last year. Last but not least, incredible contribution has been given to this process by faculty member and 2016 MFA Final Show co-curator Yossi Breger (1960–2016), to whom this exhibition is dedicated.
