For my final project I have created an illustrated edition of "The Owl", a book of short
stories written by Nissim Aloni. Nissim Aloni was a translator and playwright and is
considered one of the foremost artists in the Israeli theater. However, since his death
and even during the last years of his life, his works were no longer in the center of local
cultural interest. The goal of this project is to recreate interest in this unique collection
of stories, and through them, to renew the focus on Nissim Aloni and his works.
The stories in "The Owl" are legends of Tel Aviv, written for adults. The four short
stories are filled with imagination and humor, and they describe a voyage through
adolescence, the adolescence of a boy growing up in the Tikva neighborhood of Tel
Aviv in the 1940s. Aloni wrote the stories when he was in his twenties, and they are
laced with his own childhood memories and life experiences. At the time he was still
an anonymous young man, before becoming a famous director and playwright, and
so he had no need to fulfill expectations. We therefore find the stories still fresh and
original even today, fifty years later.
The visual descriptions in the stories, which are typical of Aloni›s writing as a
playwright, are a convenient foundation for the production of illustrations, which
accompany the text in a smooth and natural way. The collection of stories was first
published in the 1970s by «Tarmil» Publications edited by Yisrael Har, with illustrations
by the artist Yossel Bergner, who was a close friend of Nissim Aloni and designed
scenery and costumes for many of his plays.
