Vessels of Violence
There is a painting by Klee called Angelus Novus. It shows an angel who seems about to move away from something he stares at. His eyes are wide, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how the angel of history must look. His face is turned toward the past. Where a chain of events appears before us, he sees on single catastrophe, which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it at his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise and has got caught in his wings; it is so strong that the angel can no longer close them. This storm drives him irresistibly into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows toward the sky. What we call progress is this storm. - Walter Benjamin It is possible to think of photography as a vessel in a number of ways. First of all the camera is built to contain the light it is receiving within it, preserving the image that is captured. The printed image on the other hand does not only contain all the visual information (of the photographed object), but is also charged with the viewers knowledge and associations on the subject, and affected by his economic, social and cultural background as well as the state of mind and the circumstances that he is in while observing (the image). Being well aware of these conditions of photography my main interest in vessels comes from my research on the relationship between time and place: a certain place has the ability to contain various layers of history. This makes it possible for an image to become independent from the time it was taken and to connect itself to other time dimensions. The images refer to an action that occurred and is now inscribed in the memory of the specific place. In my opinion this influences the viewers experience and the way the image is perceived. 'Vessels of Violence' describes an observation of specific cases where violence is contained in e
