The workshop is a collaboration between the Photography Department and the KKL-JNF Photo Archive (Jewish National Fund). We will discuss the concept of the archive, dwell upon its philosophical implications and acquaint ourselves with key examples of photographic artwork made in context of archives. We will re-think the meaning of the term “documentary” in the reality of the 21st century, in which the definition and meaning of this term and its use are constantly being re-evaluated. We will compare our new understanding with previous concepts of “documentary” that we will discover while researching the archive. The students will learn practical skills needed to develop a documentary project which they will put to use while they work on a personal project; created at one of the KKL-JNF sites in/around Jerusalem in relation to the archival imagery, which they will present for critique at the end of the semester.
