Why are cities used as site forcinematic creation? How does the cinematic gaze become a starting point for observing the city and planning it? And how through those relations the city is both created and imagined? The course will deal with the mutual relations between the city and its design in various genres of cinema and the new media. We'll discuss various readings of the urban space offered by the cinematic language, parallel to the theoretical discussion about the city in sociology, urban studies and architecture. We will examine the influence the "cinematic city" has on the imagined and actual urban spaces. During the first semester we will watch moving images, read texts about the city and analyze urban spaces. In the second semester, students will develop their themes on cities and their representation in different media
