The course surveys the development of Aesthetics and its key concepts from the classical age to the 20th century. The first semester will start in discussing Plato's and Aristotle's thinking on art. Next, we will follow the development of theoretical thinking on art from the Renaissance to the 18th century. This includes discussion of Classicism, Empiricism, Kant, Schiller and Romanticism. The second semester will discuss aesthetic theories from the 19th and 20th centuries. This includes the aesthetic views of Nietzsche, Benjamin, Heidegger, as well as those of more contemporary theories, such as phenomenology, formalism, structuralism and post-structuralism.
