Palestinian Art: The Quest for Identity
This course will deal with the development of Palestinian art from the early 19th century to the present, with an emphasis on contemporary art. It will deal with works of visual art in all its forms: painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, photography etc. It will explore the central themes that Palestinian artists seek to explore through their works, and ask how this is done in the geo-political context in which they live: in Israel, in territories of the Palestinian Authority, throughout the Arab world and elsewhere. The discussion will also raise questions related to the multi-cultural space in which Palestinian artists operate today. We will discuss the status of women in Arab society and its reflection in works of visual art. Special emphasis will be placed on the wishes of women artists and their unique expression of the feminist critique of the society.
