When looking from outer space the blue color of planet Earth stands out. Indeed, more than 72 percent of the Earth's surface is covered with ocean water. The world's oceans and freshwater reservoirs make life possible on Earth: the lives of 3 billion people depend on the marine ecosystem - fish and seafood; The oceans absorb about 30% of the man-made carbon dioxide emissions and, of course, fresh water allows for life - drinking, growing food and more. In 2015, the UN declared 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted by 193 countries. Two of these goals focus on water: ensuring availability and sustainable management of water to all and the conservation and sustainably use of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. The inter-departmental summer course "Blue Front – Design Thinking as a tool for Sustainability challenges between Sea and Land" will examine the principles of sustainability through the lens of water using Design Thinking methodologies. The course will combine theoretical studies - demography and population, commons, consumer culture and consumption, waste, plastic, marine reserves, water and water conservation, alongside tours and guest lectures by leading experts on the subject in Israel and a practical project that will examine the ability of designers to influence one of the greatest challenges facing humanity.
