During the course we shall examine the wide range of illustrated books for children. We shall survey the development of this genre from the 19th century through to the Picturebook of today. The objective of the course is the focus of attention to the illustration as visual interpretation of the verbal text in general and the illustrated book for children as a unique genre. The historical-cultural observation of the visual aspects of the illustrated book will encompass the special contribution of illustration and the illustrators in the development of the classic children's books. A few examples of these works are Struwwelpeter, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Rabbit, and The Wizard of Oz; and some of the artists studied will be Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Maurice Sendak and Tommy Unger.
