The course will cover, over the two semesters, significant events in the history of cinema - from the proto-cinematic technologies of the 19th century to the innovations in 21st century digital cinema around the world. A special focus will be given to the national, social, political, economical, and historical contexts in which some of the dominant movements of cinematic expression developed, as well as to individuals whose unique style has influenced cinema as a form of art and entertainment. The course will concentrate, for the most part, on works of fiction film, but will also include key moments in the history of documentary and experimental cinema. Throughout the course we will observe how perspectives on aesthetics, politics, gender, labor and technology have shaped and continue to transform the historical narratives of cinema.
