Book design is a unique situation in our field: we are responsible not only for the content editing and design, but at the same time we design the containing object. Our work is an ongoing dialogue between historical conventions and production limitations facing recent concepts and digital practices. Complete control over this wide decision-making system, gives real satisfaction. The studio will focus on three working processes: (1) Inside-Out (from the text to the object) — transferring narrative from the private domain to the public; (2) Langue-Parole (from the cultural norms to the individual performance) — changing the role of the designer and the way the way in which the text is read; (3) Concrete-Applicative (from the object to a dynamic space) — the book as a platform for experience design. The students will complete the studio with three projects, objects on the spectrum of communication and mind — intellectual, emotional and sensual. This method will lead us to deal with the changes of our time, to seek innovative solutions to the print forms. Typography will be our leading tool (a lot of InDesign). Special emphasis will be given to the traditional practices and to the production technologies: paper types, printing methods and binding techniques.
