What is the optimal way to run a dictatorship? How does it feel to be an immigrant in a foreign
country without knowing the local language? Can you fall in love with a virtual character?
Games have the power to ask these questions by placing the player in the crux of the interactive
and narrative experience.
In the Serious Games studio, we’ll question our basic assumptions about games as a medium,
and the role of games in the modern world. We’ll delve into mechanics as a means to convey a
message, games as art, the role of the player in creating the game’s story, and more. Over the
course of the studio, students will get to know unique games that defy all definitions of genres,
games which challenge the definition of “games” and of “fun”, games that make us ponder, ask
questions, get mad, and cry.
The students in the course will create small but complete games, from concept to finished
product, with the main focus being on interactive experiences that convey a message or an
agenda, and with visual design that supports the game’s message.
Products of the course will include both digital and analog games. No prior experience in
working with a game engine is needed.
