Sandboxes for Exploring Collective Futures: Public Theaters for Participatory Tech Governance

This presentation introduces "sandbox" environments as experimental spaces for collective engagement with emergent technologies and their regulation. These frameworks prioritize participatory and iterative experimentation, empowering diverse stakeholders, from designers to everyday citizen, to actively shape and contest the future trajectories of technologies like AI and blockchain. In contrast to traditional governance models that emphasize top-down regulation or technical safeguards, sandboxes offer a dynamic alternative where public deliberation and creative exploration thrive. Framing these environments as "public theaters," Dr. Denisa Kera-Reshef will present her latest work on LLM-based agent-to-agent simulations, showcasing how AI can function as a tool for social deliberation rather than as a black-boxed authority. Through this approach, she aims to highlight the potential of sandbox frameworks to democratize technological futures by fostering inclusive and performative engagements with innovation.
