Islam Nashef, a 2025 graduate of the Department of Jewelry and Fashion, won the Footwear category at the international Only Natural competition - an international student design competition focused on natural materials, sustainability, innovation, and design. The competition encourages students and recent graduates to explore alternatives to synthetic and plastic-based materials and to create original, functional and commercially relevant designs.

The competition is organised by the Leather & Hide Council of America (LHCA) on behalf of Only Natural. It is supported by organisations representing natural materials and fibres, including the American Wool Council, American Hardwood Export Council, National Industrial Hemp Council, Mohair Council of America, and American Softwoods. The competition also works with Arts Thread.

The competition began in 2024, making the 2026 edition its third year. In its first year, more than 1,000 applicants from 68 countries and 100 academic institutions participated. Islam Nashef won the competition with his project 'Macho'.

About the Project:
A sculptural mule created by hand-layering vegetable-tanned leather until it takes on the density and structure of wood, MACHO explores identity, masculinity and craftsmanship. Inspired by the exaggerated image of the “macho man”, the design challenges conventional ideas of strength while celebrating leather’s versatility as a natural material. Its distinctive construction, storytelling and exceptional craftsmanship earned it this year’s Footwear title.
