Threefold Tale

An interdisciplinary course exploring the intersection of technology- design- craft.

The course provides both theoretical foundations and practical experience, presenting technology as one of the designer's primary creative materials. Students will explore the fundamental principles behind manufacturing technologies and learn how these principles are translated into material thinking, design decisions, and making.

Throughout the course, each student will have the opportunity to work with materials they already enjoy while also discovering unfamiliar materials and manufacturing processes, broadening both their technical knowledge and creative vocabulary.

Course topics include:

• Introduction to the principal industrial manufacturing technologies for plastics and rubber, metals, wood, textiles, fibers, and other materials.
• Hands-on experience with a variety of manufacturing and finishing processes.
• Development of research, design, prototyping, and hands-on fabrication skills.
• Working with manufacturers: preparing technical drawings, requesting quotations, and communicating professionally through email and technical documentation.
• Translating ideas between two-dimensional and three-dimensional representation.
• Strengthening technological communication skills and developing the ability to analyze existing products from both technical and manufacturing perspectives.
