Photography, Activism and Participatory Art

During the course, we will examine together various practices of using the photographic image as a tool for intervention in the public space, for dialogue, empowerment, and taking a stand. We will learn how the photographic medium can exist as a practice of resistance, alongside the possibility of harnessing it for connection, communication, and discourse. The learning will include methodologies of intervention and principles of developing Participatory Art projects.

During the semester, students will experience working in small groups that will include students from different home departments, in order to channel their diverse abilities and perspectives towards the development and realization of exercises and micro-projects.

The course outcomes may include a wide range of display methods, ranging from guerrilla (pirate) hanging of posters in public spaces, distributing flyers, fanzines, screenings, mini-exhibitions in non-gallery spaces, the online sphere, or any other method chosen by each group.
