Fashion: Body, Research, and Visual Language

The course seeks to simulate a professional situation in which a designer enters an existing creative system: a studio, a fashion house, a graduate project, or a body of research and is required to develop a new creative direction from within it.

Through close observation of projects presented in the graduate exhibition, students will develop an independent design interpretation based on research, body, material, language, and personal position.

Each student will choose a project from the Bezalel graduate exhibition, across the various departments, that has a direct relationship to the human body. This project will serve as a starting point for research, inspiration, and the development of a new fashion-oriented project.

Throughout the course, we will engage with concept development, research methodologies, and design processes, while becoming familiar with different approaches to creating a series or collection in relation to the working methods of various designers and artists.

The course will examine design strategies based on abstract concepts alongside concrete sources of inspiration drawn from formal, material, and cultural worlds. We will study the work of groundbreaking designers and artists, identifying the methods, decisions, and theoretical contexts that shaped their creative processes.

From this foundation, students will develop a parallel process: from the formulation of an idea and the construction of a research language, through the development of a new collection, and toward the final product whether presented on a fashion runway, in a gallery, in a store, in a museum, or in any other cultural context.
