IDENTIFYING THE EXPANDED FIELD OF ISRAELI ART
The course will analyze the relationship between artists and their identities within the field of contemporary art. The first part of the course will be devoted to how nationality and education can influence the practice of an artist. The second part will present figures from different generations such as Michal Rovner, Keren Cytter, Jan Tichy, Elad Lassry, Mika Rottemberg, Haim Steinbach, Gili Tal, Uri Aran and Daniel Silver, who are connected to Israel although their work, in one way or another, is not really present, visible or accessible in Israel. The third part will look at historical artists and their international exposure through institutional collaborations such as the Israeli Pavilion in Venice. The last part will consist of practical assignments given to students and related to the media and conceptual strategies employed by the aforementioned artists; the assignments will be presented during the course and discussed.
